My get-around bike right now has actually been an extremely versatile workhorse and great ‘stand by’ ride. Bought used in Anchorage off of Craigslist for $350 its an ‘07 (?) Specialized Rockhopper, hardtail. It didn’t have a scratch on it and only 32 miles on the odometer (can you say ‘good deal!’?). It was my only bike in Alaska for a year so I rode it everywhere for a summer, come winter I put wide, big knobby tires on it and did the winter thing. Being a 21 inch frame it worked great for winter riding. The one drawback with this bike is it seems to have been built the year before disc brakes were standard so it still has the rim brakes, but for what I use it for it works just fine.
My personal views of Specialized as a company will prevent me from ever buying anything else from them, this bike however almost seems to be bullet proof. It is now with me in the lower 48 and I have mounted street tires on it and use it mainly for commuting on paved trails, riding around the campgrounds or just running to the store. Its extremely handy to have this one with me so I can save the Tomac strictly for trail riding.
